FAQ's

FAQ's - Here is a list of some frequently asked questions/concerns from years past.

Q: How much money should I give my child?

A:  We recommend at least $200 for incidentals and gifts.
Spending money is a tricky question and always a tough one to answer.  But, from past experiences, 99% of the time they will end up spending what they have available.  Visiting markets, being bombarded by vendors and shopping for gifts is both a fun and exciting part of traveling.  It is also a cultural experience in learning how to haggle as well as a valuable tool in money management.  We try to assist them with their impulsivity as well as haggling, however money management is something many will learn the hard way.  We do encourage them to buy gifts as sharing them upon return is priceless in many ways.
Kids also tend to buy snacks, soda and odds and ends in transit.  When they buy these at the airport, the costs can add up.

Q:  How should they bring/carry the money?

A: What we recommend is that they carry enough cash with them for the first several days.  We also recommend that they carry an ATM card to access any further cash they might need.  This also allows for a deposit on your end which can be accessed abroad in case of emergency, impulsivity etc.
You can also give us any spending/emergency money/ATM card to be distributed accordingly to avoid impulse/over-buying.

We strongly recommend that they bring a neck wallet or waist wallet.  We ask that they also have a copy of their passport, emergency contact information, allergy information and other emergency information in a secure pocket in their neck wallet.  Upon check-in at every hotel each student will be given a hotel card to put in their neck wallet as well.

Q: If we want you to carry money, emergency notes, idiosyncrasies, medications etc. how do we get those to you?

A: Please clearly label all information, money etc. and put them in envelopes  (with instructions) and give them to us at the airport.

Q:  Do we give you medications?

A: This is a personal decision that you and your child can make together.  We will know what medications your child requires and will give daily (and individual) reminders.  If you want us to distribute any meds we are more than happy to do this as well (with signed form).  Again, just clearly label all medications with instructions.  Further, you can also put medications for each day in separate baggies labeled with the date and time to be taken.

Q:  How do we get in touch with you in case of an emergency?

A: See all emergency contact numbers on the blog (if not up it will be up shortly).  We are never more than several hours out of response time(minus flights) and a majority of the time you should be able to get in touch with us immediately.

Q:  Do you allow them to bring electronics?

A: Yes.  With all the time in transit we allow kids to bring electronics.  However, we discourage any international cellphone coverage as this defeats the purpose of being away.  We will be vigilant, and often times will collect and hold electronics when they need to be out enjoying the experience.

Q: What are the protocols in case of an emergency?

A: Depending on the severity of the emergency, you can expect a phone call immediately to discuss the course of action.  Denver Academy will also be notified immediately and will be informed on all situations and updates.  If correspondence is not possible, understand that we will make our best, most prudent and well-advised course of action.  We have tour guides, tour agencies and a plethora of people looking out for our well-being. Every chaperone is experienced in handling emergency situations.
FURTHER - We have insurance through Denver Academy, travel insurance as well as emergency funds - so the safety and security of everyone on the trip is addressed immediately and with utmost prudence.
